Problem Description
- You receive an email with the subject Annual review of WHOIS information supposedly from Websavers Inc but with a from address of do_not_reply@name-controls.com
- This email indicates that you must confirm that your contact information in WHOIS is accurate and a link is provided in the email to view your WHOIS information for accuracy.
- Since both the link and the from email address show the domain name-controls.com, it's not clear if this is legitimate email nor if you should click the link
- The email shows as being from ICANN or related to ICANN regulations.
Problem Resolution
These emails are sent on behalf of us by ICANN (Who is ICANN?) to ensure that your domain contact information is always up to date. The subject line is usually "Important Notice Regarding Your Domain Name(s)" We highly recommend following their guidance -- the more accurate your domain details, the easier it is to ensure you maintain ownership and control of the domain.
We totally understand the hesitation and commend your security-focused diligence for having searched our knowledgebase to confirm the legitimacy of this email and ensure it is not malware or a phishing attempt.
These emails are legitimate messages sent by our upstream registrar partners and it is safe to click the link within as long as you have confirmed that the link goes to name-controls.com and no other domain.
If you do not feel comfortable clicking the link, that's OK too! Instead, you can verify your domain contact details directly by completing the steps here.
