Immediately upon sending an email I get a server error or bounce message about rcpthosts or relay access Print

  • 1

Problem Description

You may receive an error or bounce message indicating:

  • Error msg: the recipient "sales@websavers.ca" was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying.
  • The "domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts"
  • 454 4.7.1 [YOUR_EMAIL]: Relay access denied

Problem Resolution

This occurs for one or both of two reasons: 1) you're trying to use a port that is unavailable for sending email, or 2) authentication is not enabled.

To resolve this you must configure your email application's sending/outgoing/smtp settings to:

a) Use port 587 (and NOT port 25)
b) Ensure authentication is enabled with the username and password for your email account. Note: some mail apps say the username and password is optional - it is not.
c) TLS/SSL is On/Enabled

Details on the correct and complete configuration to use for mail here.

Note that webmail will function normally even while your local mail client is producing this error.
