Problem Description

Upon login to Plesk you see a notification indicating Error: Failed to update the ModSecurity rule set.

Problem Resolution

Periodically (typically weekly or monthly) your server tries to download a new ruleset for the web application firewall (ModSecurity). Sometimes it may fail for any number of reasons (from authentication problems to the rule providers server being down, to temporary DNS issues). It will simply try again the following week or month (depending on the config). If you want to force the download immediately, complete the following steps:

  • Tools and Settings -> Web Application Firewall -> Settings
  • Click "OK"

The error will go away. If there continues to be a problem retrieving the updated rules, you will see the error again with a bit more info to go on, like an HTTP error.
