You receive a bounce email with error 550 Message rejected Print

  • 116

Problem Description

You receive a bounce similar to the following error:

<recipient@ns.sympatico.ca>recipient@ns.sympatico.ca:</recipient@ns.sympatico.ca>
4.59.182.109 failed after I sent the message.
Remote host said: 550 Message rejected

Although SMTP error 550 is a generic message, it is often used to indicate a spam filter has blocked the message from reaching the recipient. This is true in all cases if the recipient has email hosted with BellAliant (xyz@ns.sympatico.ca, xyz@bellaliant.net, etc).

Resolution

In order to eliminate this issue, you will need to contact the company that maintains the receiving server and have them whitelist your email address.

BellAliant Specific Resolution (may work for other providers as well)

Solution 1 - Per Recipient

In the case of email being sent to BellAliant email addresses, if the recipient adds your email address to their address book in webmail, your address will be automatically whitelisted and your newly composed emails should be received successfully without a bounce.

Ask the recipient to log in to BellAliant Webmail. They will then need to choose Addresses > Add New Address and enter your contact information in order to add you to their address book. Once saved, your emails should now make it through successfully. If the recipient is using the 'new' BellAliant Webmail style (not classic), they will find the address book in the lower left hand corner and the button to add a new contact will then be in the top left corner.

Solution 2 - Global

If you have been sending mass messages, such as newsletters, to a number of recipients with BellAliant hosted email, your ISP-provided IP address may have been blacklisted and not the Websavers server. In this event, our clients have been able to resolve this issue by having their ISP change their dynamic IP address.
