Problem Description
You receive a bounce email stating the following error when attempting to send mail to a domain you host that does not actually host their email within your account.
"Sorry. Although I'm listed as a best-preference MX or A for that host, it isn't in my control/locals file, so I don't treat it as local. (#5.4.6)"
Problem Resolution
If you're hosting the website, but the email is with another provider, there are two steps you must take to configure Plesk to match this set-up:
- If the domain is using Web Savers name servers, but email is hosted elsewhere, then we are hosting the DNS and web content, but not email. In this case, you will need to disable mail services for the domain
- If the domain is not using Web Savers name servers and email is hosted elsewhere, then we are not hosting the DNS for the domain nor the email service. In this case you must both disable the mail service as well as DNS for the domain. Login to Plesk and choose "DNS Settings" then click the "Turn Off" button.
Wait about 30 minutes and the problem should now be resolved.
